Personnel – The Potsdam Community Band welcomes all adult musicians who play traditional concert band instruments (woodwinds, brass, percussion). Talented high school students may participate with the recommendation of their own music teacher and their parent/guardian signature. Membership in the band is open, and seating is assigned by section leader. Current musicians in the band range from adult beginners to those who teach music as part of their career.

History – Inspired by the rich musical history in Potsdam, NY, a group of adult avocational musicians envisioned a community-based ensemble that would perform music enjoyable to both players and audience members. With a little determination and a lot of networking, a leadership committee was formed to re-initiate the Potsdam Community Band for the Summer of 2010.

The response by musicians was overwhelming, and 84 musicians played under blue skies for a crowd of hundreds at our inaugural concert during the Potsdam Summer Festival. The audience responded enthusiastically, and the event was declared a success. A few years later the Potsdam Community Band added a second outdoor concert to its Summer season, as well as an (indoor!) Winter concert in January.  After a reduced schedule brought on by the pandemic, the Potsdam Community Band resumed its regular concerts and is preparing for its 2023 Summer season concerts in Potsdam and Madrid.

Logo – The band’s logo was designed in honor of the 2010 reconvening of the band. It captures the spirit of the band. Blue was chosen as the accent color in homage to the old time Potsdam Cornet Band, which proudly wore blue uniforms in Potsdam long ago.
